Hi Malcolm, My OM-4 has the built-in diopter correction and it's adjusted to give me a clear picture in the viewfinder. I'm using a micro prism/split image focusing screen and really don't have problems focusing where there are distinct vertical lines so that I can use the split image. It's the scenes where I have to use the ground glass for focusing that give me the problems. From my reading of the Canon NewsLists I'm beginning to wonder how often I might need to manually focus when using an EOS-3 and, if it's often, the Canon might be a step backward from my OM-4. Maybe the answer is to find a rental shop here in Atlanta and try one out.
