Hi All,

Thanks for your views and suggestions about a mid-range telephoto lens, they
were all very interesting and have in fact probably created more questions
than they've answered (which is not a bad thing!).

Basically to answer a couple of queries: I'm using an EOS 5 body at the
moment but I may well trade it in for an EOS 3 or secondhand EOS 1 (not sure
which variety) within the next 12 months. As for publishing I would be
looking to submit photos to a library which specialises in nature and
wildlife pictures and to approach small-scale magazines and book publishers
direct. I currently contribute to a botanical photo library and gardening
magazines with my flower and garden photos, and just felt that I'd like to
'branch out' (no pun intended!) to selling wildlife photos and landscapes in
similar markets too. I'm not exactly after full-page spreads in BBC Wildlife
Magazine or National Geographic on day one!! :-)

I did wonder about a prime lens but as I originally wanted a general purpose
lens that would replace my standard-issue 75-300 and be good for a variety
of subjects (landscapes etc. as well as wildlife), I thought a zoom would
probably give me more value for money. However this appears to be an
unreachable Holy Grail :-) at least within my budget, so I'm now going to
concentrate on the wildlife aspect as it seems this requires a much more
specialised lens setup than I'd originally realised! As so many of you have
recommended a prime for wildlife I will now look into this route a lot more
seriously, with the other option looking to be finding a secondhand 100-400
L IS at a reasonable price. So... here is my second set of questions! ;-)

1) What is the best focal length prime to look at (assuming I can afford
it), for wildlife photography in particular?
2) Is IS on the Canon primes worth the extra money?
3) There seems to be a mixed reaction to using teleconvertors but as I can't
afford a very long lens currently I will probably have to make do with one
initially, so which one is better (optically or in any other way), the 1.4x
or the 2x?
4) Are third-party primes any good? I certainly can't afford most of the top
level Canon ones new and even secondhand my choice seems limited if I go
down the Canon route, so do Sigma, Tokina and the rest have any primes in
this range worth looking at for 800 or less (new or secondhand)? Do they
have compatible high quality teleconvertors too?

Again thanks in advance for any advice!

Regards,
Caroline
