Hi Alex,

I believe that any 28/1.8 II will require the chip upgrade as I *think* they were 
mostly all made prior to the intoduction of the Elan 7 (but I could be wrong).  I know 
that in Australia the only one available (new) for some time now has been the EX 
model.   I presume that the 28/1.8 II is no longer in production.

As for "robustitude", I'd say it's better than the 50 1.8 II.  Not many lenses aren't 
better built, but then not too many are sharper :-)  

It's build is about equal to any of the kit zooms, which are generally better than the 
50 Mk II but like the 50, it's quite a bit sharper than them.  Your 24-85 will have 
much better build quality.
