I was asked off-list about the EF24/2.8 and thought the response was valid
for the entire list.

I love the 24mm/2.8, it's one of the reasons I'm such a prime fan. I did a
lot of research before buying this lens. One of the surprising things about
it is that its MTF curves are on par and in places better than the EF 24mm
f1.4 L lens. In order to gain the extra two stops of light, Canon had to
make some compromises with the optics (the same applies to the 50/1.4 vs
the 50L/1.0, the 50/f1.4 is superior in most regards except when opened up
to f1.0 :).

The 24/2.8 lens is also superior to the 16-35L and 17-35L zooms. It has
less distortion and better MTFs. Like many of you, I have limited funds.
I've been spending my money on better non-L primes rather than inferior L
zooms.

The images I've taken with the 24/2.8 are bright, contrasty, great bokeh.
The lens has great depth of field when stopped down and has the ability to
present nice selective focus when opened up. The minimum focusing distance
is 25cm, which is fantastic for the "subject in its environment" type of
photos.

I bought it in Japan so I got the hood and bag for free. Al in all, it's a
great little addition to my tool kit.

Cons:
  * I would really have loved a version with full-time manual focus.
  * The focus distance window is small and a bit useless
  * The petal shaped hood doesn't reverse for storage that easily

As I mentioned earlier, my EF 100/2.8 USM Macro should be arriving late
this week if Henry and his boys are on schedule. I'm going to Malaysia
next month for 3 weeks, so I can provide feedback after that trip.

If I were to buy another inexpensive prime, I think I would get either the
35/2 or 400/2.8L IS (just kidding).
