WIth the EF 50/1.4 the hood can be turned around 180 degrees and twisted on "backwards" for storage in your camera bag. It takes about 10 seconds to store the hood this way. This reduces the volume considerably -- and you can still shoot auto-focus if you need your camera in a hurry. With the EF 24/2.8, the hood can also be reversed -- but because the hood is petal shaped and not round, you have to match the notch exactly when twisting the hood on. This slows down the process of reversing the hood considerably, so it's more of a pain. I've cross-threaded and mismatched the petal shaped hood numerous times. There has to be a better system.
