Sounds like a poor contact problem, you may want to just buff the contact a
little bit with penceil eraser.

I've been using NiMH in 540EZ and then 550EX for the past 5 years, no
problem at all, but do try to get the maximum capacity units available at
the time to get the most bang out of the bucks, I bought 1,600 mah units two
years ago, I suspect they might be up to 1700 to 1800 by now.
