Or, perhaps it could be that the flash is screwed in too tightly. I used to have that problem with my old Rebel G and 380EX, and sometimes it helped if I loosened the wheel a bit. I use the same flash on my Elan 7e with no problems, so maybe some camera bodies are more sensitive.
