D30, ISO 200, under and over exposure, under if the center is pointing
at a light object, over if it pointing at a dark object. Perfectly logical
since it's trying to make them gray. But the problem is that these objects
are not 1/2 the frame, like a shirt, they are just a little larger than the
focusing point in the middle of the frame. The D30 has 3 focusing points
left,
middle, and right. It seems to be taking an extremely tight center weighted
reading during the pre-flash. It does this with the 550ex as well as the
on-board flash. The solution to this is to use the FE lock button (*), while

pointed at the subject, then compose and shoot. This, unfortunately, pretty
much kills any candidness, and sometimes people think you've taken a picture

and leave. I'm pretty sure this an E-TTL problem with the D30, I don't know
how other E-TTL equipped EOS bodies handle E-TTL.

The auto thyristor, on the other hand, takes a much broader reading of the
scene which yields a correct exposure a higher percentage of the time,
unless
a very large part of the frame is either dark or light.
