Hello John.
Here is what I think is better for you:
1. Put your 1V in manual mode.
2. Chose aperture which will give you enough DOF.
3. Then metter ambient light and set exposure time so background will be
underexposed 1 or 0,5 stops.
4. If exposure time is too long then put your camera on tripod -- there is
no alternatives only monopod may help little bit.
5. If ETTL works right then flash will iluminate foreground correctly, dark
suits or white wedding dresses over active focusing point may full your
camera.
6. To avoid this you have to set flash power manualy.
7. And here is formula necessary to calculate necessary power:
fraction from full power=(guide number*IS)/(aperture*distance to
object);
where ISO is 4 if you use ISO 400 film, 1,6 if ISO 160 film
and so on.
and here is example: guide number is 55, film ISO 400, aperture 4.0
and distance to object is 5m.
fraction from full power=(55*4)/(4*5)=11 wich means 1/11 part from
full power or ~3.5 stops from max power.
8. !!!And more important: try this technique before, arrange your friens in
some dark place and make sure that you get good images!!!
Maybe somone else will comment my advice? Just to be sure.
