I don't have more than one 550EX yet so can't test myself. Let's assume I'm photographing a subject in an environment where using automatic flash is not possible. Ok, I set the flashes in M-mode. I want to have one of the flashes on-camera (master flash) while others are off-camera slaves (of course). To use flash meter I need to fire all flashes simultaneously, including the on-camera flash which is the main light. If I need to locate the flash meter further away than about two arms lengths I'm in trouble because the only way to fire all flashes is to test-fire the on-camera flash (I don't want to fire the shutter because I loose one frame in my EOS-3 each time; I hope EOS-3 level digitals get cheap soon...). Now, if I remember correctly, 550EX manual says that even if the on-camera 550EX is set in slave mode it will function as a master when the camera is used. So no problems here. The great thing would be that I might be able to use ST-E2 as a hand-held remote trigger for the flashes (if the on-camera flash would function also as a slave when camera is not used). Now if someone could make a quick test to check if this works I would feel safer to buy ST-E2 although I will do it probably in any case for other purposes.
