It would seem to me that purchasing a remote shutter release for your EOS3,
along with an extension cable for the remote shutter release, would be a
more cost effective solution than to purchase an ST-E2. ST-E2s are
expensive. You're also dependent on your lithium-ion battery working in the
ST-E2, and those batteries are also expensive.

Another option is to attach your flash meter to an old tripod, and then set
up the tripod to measure at whatever point is important to you. This is
what I used to do before I invested in a remote shutter release extension
cable. You end up walking back and fourth a lot, but it's not unreasonable.
Or you can use a cheap pair of binoculars, strapped around your neck, to see
the light meter reading without any walking. Cost of a cheap tripod simply
to hold your flash meter should be far less than purchasing an ST-E2.

And a third option is to use an assistant. Sometimes my ten year old son
found himself helping me by holding the light meter, before I bought the
extension cable.

I also believe it's possible to take multiple exposures with a film camera
without wasting film. For example, on my Canon A1, I can set the film
advance level in such a way, pre-shutter release, such that post-shutter
release, advancing the lever would not advance the film. Twenty years
later, my guess is that the EOS3 can do this too without difficulty. I
would think that the capability of taking multiple exposures on one frame of
film is still a much valued feature of film photographers today.

Best regards,

I could use the on-camera in slave mode - if it works as I
suppose - to use ST-E2 as a remote release for the flashes.

including the on-camera flash which is the main light. If I need
to locate the flash meter further away than about two arms lengths
I'm in trouble because the only way to fire all flashes is to
test-fire the on-camera flash (I don't want to fire the shutter
because I loose one frame in my EOS-3 each time; I hope EOS-3
