Well, B&H got me my replacement EF 500 Super today, and it seems to be fully
functional. It's definitely not as solid as the 420EX, but seems adequate
for my light-duty use.

I've got a couple of questions for those who already have one: one, what's
the protrusion on the front of the stand that comes with it? Is it some
kind of attachment for mounting an umbrella or something? It almost looks
like it could fit into another hotshoe-sized thing. Second, how exactly do
you set the appropriate power while in manual wireless slave mode? The
manual says to "press the SEL button several times to make the flash output
indicator blink;" I presume this is the distance scale. But no matter how
many times I push the SEL button, I can't get the distance scale to appear.
I can set the aperture and ISO manually, but no distance.

Otherwise, it looks like a slick little unit...now I just need some victims,
er, test subjects...to try it out on. ;-)
