Well, ok, looks like I figured this one out...you have to have the flash on
the camera, push the shutter halfway or hit the AE lock button, then remove
the flash before the AE lock expires.  Then you get aperture settings AND
the distance scale.

That being said, I am now officially confused.  With the flash off the
camera, changing the aperture value changes the flash-to-subject distance on
the scale, as expected.  But what does changing the aperture value on the
flash really mean?  Is it the aperture that should be set on the camera,
with both the flash and the camera at the indicated distance from the
subject?  Or does it mean something else entirely?

Man, I thought I had this photography thing all figured out, and then this
comes along...
