Just curious - exzactly how different in terms of resulting image quality
are, say, a Tiffen CP and a B&W CP? Is Tiffen's acceptable? How much image
degradation occurs with different types of filters, or can an average person
tell the difference?

Canon filters are made by Tiffen. Generally not coated.
Hoya are coated but most use aluminum rings which are not always as easy to
put on an remove from your lens.
The thinner the filter/ring the harder it becomes. I get around this using a
candle and rubbing it on the threads.
Hama I would bet are OEM'd from Marumi or Hoya. B+W and Heliopan are made in
