Hugo,

THe typical use for an Off-Camera Shoe cord is to use it with a flash
bracket.
This way the flash is always above the lens and eliminates the shadows which
would otherwise appear with the cord ensuring the flash will fire every time
whether indoors or outdoors.  The ST-E2 does not always fire the flashes
100% of the time. Let me explain.  I have both and while the ST-E2 is
excellent if the flash is facing away from the camera and the front of the
flash body not pointing toward the ST-E2 at even a slight angle the 550EX
will not fire.
Indoors is fine as the ST-E2 infrared beam will bounce off walls and trigger
the flash. Outdoors is a higher risk. I run two on lightstands side by side
and have to turn the flash bodies at a slight angle inwards allowing the
ST-E2 to fire.
