I've done some unscientific comparative tests with my EOS 100, 5, and 1N.

The 1N is a little more sensitive than the other two. I've found the
light level needed for AF to be up to the specs. This means, the 1N will need
one stop less light to AF than the 5 or 100. But the specs are only true for
one shot AF, in continuous mode they all need some stops (2-3) more light
to AF successfully. All according to my totally unscientific test only. ;-)

Yes, real dumb "feature".

Guilty as well :-( But besides that, the VG-10 is great, much better than the
PB-E1 for the EOS 1/1N. Only the EOS 3 and 1V with the improved PB-E2 also
give the full functionality like the VG-10 (all buttons and the dial are
duplicated)

Hmm, not quite, although my memory tends to bring up wrong information
lately ;-) I'm pretty sure you can activate ECF and still select the AF
point manually. ECF will only do its thing if you activate all 5 points.
So all you lose by activating it is the automatic selection of the AF
point(s) - and even that will be available if ECF fails to choose a point.
No big loss, IMHO.

Also, if you activate the custom function, it will *add* the DOF preview
functionality to the AE lock button. AE lock still works. Nevertheless,
it is a nuisance because every time you use DOF preview the exposure is
locked, which might not be what you intended. I prefer this version over EC
because I've got the feeling EC irritates my eye. This is likely a personal
problem of mine, though, and not really caused by the LEDs lighting. I've
found I have to open up my eyes wider than I usually do to make ECF work.
So by doing this constantly I get the eye problems.
