Evrim,

I use a 10 cent piece of net from like that from a wedding veil.
White or black or a color depending on the effect. You need to 
keep it tight over the like and flat. I hold it in place with
a runner band.  This is basically what the Tiffen Softnet 
filters are. 
You need to shoot wide open, the more you stop down the less the 
effect. People who say you need a 100mm lens are talking out of
their hats (as the expression goes). You can do this with a 
wide angle too but you need a wider aperture because of the 
inherent DOF in wide angle lenses.
