Hi Alex,

Sorry, I thought you were referring to the AF assist feature of the ST-E2,
which can be mimicked by setting CF7=3 on the Elan 7E.

I had the AF assist feature on my brain because I read of a trick to do the
same thing on the EOS D30 and the 550EX. Apparently if you set the 550EX to
TTL, the D30 is unable to fire the flash, and can only make use of the AF
assist. See:

Can you direct the EF 500 head away from your subject?
Or set it to minimal output?
Your idea about using unfogged processed slide film is a good one, e.g:
 http://www.digitalsecrets.net/secrets/flash.html
But will you need to glue several strips to get enough to cover the EF 500
head?
