I would get 550EX and <Sigma 500 Super or another 550EX>,
ST-E2 and OSC2.

Why 550EX level flashes? --- They have manual mode.

Why Sigma as a second flash? --- It has dumb optical slave mode
so by connecting the 550EX on camera (with or without OSC2)
I can get wireless slave functionality in manual mode totally
without any preflashes (set the master flash 'master' switch
in manual position and flashes in 'M' mode). Having preflashes
(either for exposure measurement or slave control) makes using
flash meter error prone at reduced power levels (although using
ST-E2 helps here).
Sigma is also cheaper.

Why 550EX as the main flash? --- Better quality, works with
"every" Canon camera.

Why ST-E2? --- More freedom. I prefer to *not* use on-camera
flash if possible. Not tied to the OSC2 cable length.

Why OSC2? --- ST-E2 does not have a ball head so by using
the OSC2 it can be pointed in any direction. Can also be
moved behind the disturbing objects (e.g. outside a hide/blind
when the flashes are outside).
