Yes. The flash exposure compensation (FEC) set on a E-TTL flash unit with

facility will override the FEC set on the camera. I can't recall the source
(the
550ex users's manual maybe??), but I'm pretty sure  (although I've bad

Just went through this and yes if you set FEC on the flash, the settings
WILL override those on the camera.
Example, you set +1EV on the flash, then set FEC to -1EV on the camera, the
camera will ignore the camera -1EV and use the +1EV on the flash.

Personally I avoid P mode with flash, I usually opt for M or Av and things
work out fine.
