Did changing CF14 to off make that big a difference when you reshot the
models? In the same conditions? I've always used fill flash with CF14 at the
default setting of "on" and have not had any problems with it. I don't do
portraits often though and am interested in whether I might run into
problems in certain conditions.

Tim,

It made a huge difference. The problem was there was a shadow over the face.
Normally -1EV should have eliminated nearly all of that. In my case it did
not. While it got a bit lighter, even at +0EV the CF14 still added fill but
what I needed was the flash to equal the sun thereby elimiinating the
shadow. When I set CF14 to off, I was using -1 2/3 EV and it was perfect
everytime. Catchlight was there, all was well. Rather than take cahnces,
this time I opted to place the gal in the shade using the sun for some hair
highlights. I also doubled checked the camera's metering against my Sekonic
L508 meter and I have to say I was quite impressed with the accuracy. So
long story short, if you want to control the lighting leave CF14 off. If
not, then on is good for vacation shots, and general usage.
