Hi Tim,
Its mostly from experience. At -2 to -1 1/3 below ambient you get a
catchlight in the eyes and shadow fill.
If subject is too close to a background you will see a faint shadow. If
only a catchlight is desired use -2 or less (maybe -2 1/3 to -3) but it
would not pop the face out the way clients like it. My subject was in total
shade, some sun for a hairlight in some shots, and I used flash at that
level (-1 2/3). WOrked well. Canon's auto fill would have worked, and
freom all I read it will adjust to approximately -1.5EV which would have
done the trick, but I could not afford to take chances this time as it was
already a reshoot. I will say that the cameras meter is very accurate in
matrix mode and the flash in both standard and HSS worked flawlessly.
FWIW, I was using a 50mm F1.4 and also a 28-135IS. I used the IS at F5.6 but
preferred the 50mm at about F3.2 (yes I had adequate DOF for the subject)
since I like a blurry background. Both results were very sharp.
