This weekend, I'll again be shooting indoor hockey games for a number of
teams. I've been using my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens, on an EOS-1D body,
mounted on a monopod. Results have been reasonable (exposures are a little
underexposed and action is sometimes blurred, shooting with manual exposure,
f/2.8, 1/250th, ISO 800, AWB).

This time I have an opportunity to shoot with a Canon 200mm f/1.8L lens (a
one-and-one-third stop improvement should get me to well exposed images at
1/500th, continuing at ISO 800).

My question is, what kind of monopod Head are others using when using such a
big lens like this 200mm f/1.8L?

The monopod I have is a Bogen 3249 (which has recently been replaced by the
model 680). The head I'm currently using is just a simple quick release,
that is difficult to use with the 1D body unless I use a 1.4X extender
(which I don't for hockey shoots because I cannot afford the 1-stop
penalty).

I would appreciate any feedback from others with experience with this lens,
on what kind of monopod head works best. It will help me quickly decide
what head to go buy.

Thanks very much.

Best regards,

Bill Neukranz
