Hi Michael,
Sorry to hear about your chromes.  Could be processing off just sufficiently to
tilt the balance, or your subject's face was reflecting too much.  White
Caucasian skin reflects about 36%, not the 18% of our standard grey card.  So
you might need a whole stop extra.
All the news photographers use fill-in flash as a matter of course to reduce
subject contrast, so it must be a good idea <g>.
