Robert,
I have to respectfully disagree. Otherwise, what would E-TTL and balanced
foreground with background ambient light be? Of course you have to
understand the situations when E-TTL will work. Specifically, for flash as
the main light, your subject (being lit by the flash) has to be receiving
less ambient light than the background. Otherwise, the camera would set the
exposure for the background (what E-TTL balanced exposure tries to do) and
the flash would make the foreground over exposed. If this is the case,
then fill flash comes into play. E-TTL see the difference, then sets a
lower output (fill flash), and then you have balanced exposure, with flash
only lightening up the shadows. Of course there are many other issues you
have to be aware of, but you can't just make blanket statements like your
reply to Peter. Of course if you set the camera in manual mode and chose
your own aperture and shutterspeed, the flash will do its job and ensure the
subject get enough light, and the results may look like the "typical" flash
picture. Remember, most models and product shots are done with flash.

Cheers, JD

PS I'm not trying to jump in the middle of the war between Peter and Chip,
but I don't want people getting only part of the info.
