Actuallly, Chuck Westfall (of Canon, for those who
don't know), has told me that at least some current
bodies DO use distance info as part of the flash
exposure algorithm with lenses that provide it the
info.  But Canon uses it as a secondary factor, not
the primary factor that Nikon does.
