IS off? Why? Unless you are able to use a high shutter speed AND have a very steady hand, it doesn't make sense to turn off IS...., in fact for my airshow and car racing shooting, I actually tape the IS switch to ON so that I don't forget to turn it on, my biggest problem is to remember to switch between Mode 1(static) and 2(panning) in the heat of the moment. Even if you are able to use a high enough shutter speed to prevent user induced blur, a more steady image in the view finder surely will improve the ability of AF to stay on track.
