There should be some noise from the IS mechanism, but it's quite subtle. In a quite place, you should be able to hear it. I doubt that you'd feel any vibrations from it, though. The image should also be visibly more stable through the viewfinder. Try zooming the lens to 400mm (hand-held), and looking through the viewfinder, then half-depressing the shutter (with IS switched on of course) and looking again. The IS mechanism should make a visible improvement.
