Hi Steve,

I have both the 28-135 IS USM and the 100-400 IS USM. I only have a
simplistic understanding of Image Stabilization (ignoring vari-angle prisms
used in some video and binocular optics).

The 28-135 has a first-generation basic IS mechanism - two axis, ON-OFF
switch, should be switched off on sturdy tripod, usable on monopod. Offers
1.5 to 2 shutter steps of shake reduction.

The 100-400 has a second-generation IS mechanism which adds switchable two
axis (mode 1) or single axis (mode 2). Rated at 2 shutter steps of shake
reduction.

The Super-Telephoto lenses (300/2.8 IS, 400/2.8, 400 DO, 500, 600) have the
third-generation mechanism which adds the ability to cope with tripod use.

The fourth-generation mechanism is present in the EF 70-200 IS USM, which
has the same specs but offers up to 3 shutter steps of shake reduction.

Cheers
Julian Loke
