Not really sure about this but I have read that lithiums have a very
sharp voltage fall off when they get to the exhausted point, which could
cause the battery to show good voltage when doing a battery check, but
under a load, such as when the IS is working and the camera draws power,
the voltage could immediately fall to a unusable level and things could
"shut down".  As usual with cameras, try replacing the batteries first. 
Another thought is that it could be a contacts problem with the grip.
