I don't see it as neurotic one bit. You take a car for a spin, it's a demo. It's sold later as a demo at a reduced price. The dealership provides demos so you can check the car out. The camera shop provides demos so you can check out lenses. These are later sold as demos at a reduced price. If you want to pay full price for a lens that you have no idea how much has been used, perhaps has been demoed for years, or even rented out, used by staff, etc., then you go ahead. I'll take the lens with the seal on the box. Or a reduced price on the demo lens. It's really simple. If you deal with some small camera shop that can't afford to bring in more than one sample, can't afford to have demo lenses, then I guess you have to take what you can get.
