There are additional problems. Reducing the pixel size by making the sensor
smaller at the same or higher pixel count introduces other problems. I was
looking at the specs of some Kodak CCDs and made some simple calculations.
Assume we want a sensor size of 12mmx18mm, half of what we have now. Further
assume that people who care to buy SLRs, including professionals, are
satisfied with 18Mpixel. Now with that we calculate the pixel size to
12000um x 18000um / 18Mpixel = 12um^2. The two Kodak sensors seem to have a
well depth of a bit less then 1200e/1um^2. In our case that would give us
14400e. Assuming about 20e noise due to read-out, dark current etc you end
up with a ratio of 20:14400 = 1:720 or approximately 9 bits. That is not too
shaby but also not very exciting. I think that this number is not likely to
improve a whole lot because CCD sensors have already advanced so much that
probably no huge improvements can be expected. Also even if you can reduce
the noise by a factor of 2 you 'only' get 10 bits.
So I guess don't throw your EOS lenses out yet (unless you throw them
towards me so I can catch em). But maybe in a few years when digital
photography has taken over more and directions/demands/requirements/etc are
better known Canon might change the format again.... How knows... Canon
owners will complain big time and after 10 years most are happy because now
they have these small, great working, digital cameras. While Nikon owners
have a small camera with a huge lens mount to accomadate both the old bulky
huge lenses and the new small lenses. And of course lens x only works on
body y with limitations z... ;) Just kidding...
