If you have a 6x7cm sensor, it will almost certainly outperform a
24x36mm sensor in the same way that 6x7 film based cameras outperform
35mm cameras. The relationship will stay the same. You assume that
the resolution and overall technical quality of 35mm based digital
equipment will go beyond present film based equipment and equal
medium format film based equipment. That seems unlikely with present
technology, and also doesn't take into account that some people will
still want higher quality. Larger will most likely mean better
technical quality in the digital age as well.
What is 'good enough' is something every photographer will have to
decide for themselves. For many, a 24Mp sensor might be all they ever
want, but if you can put a 109Mp sensor (same pixel density) behind a
good 6x7 lens, someone will want it.
