If I were considering to buy an ef 50/1.8, I would try to find a used
50/1.8 mkI with metal mount. Glass would be the same but different build
quality between mkI and II. I don't see much different in picture quality
from my 28-105 and the 50MkI ( but so much different with my
70-200L). Though I have the 1.8 for a low light situation (last time I
used it was about 2 years ago...but still in my bag every minute.)

Don't be so worried about the picture quality of this particular fixed
focal lens and your zoom. Why don't you save more money and get other lens
with different focal range?

Here we go again. The 50mm F1.8 Mk II is sharper and lighter than the MkI
(period).
No ifs ands or buts. Yes, it is made more from plastic v. metal with the Mk
I, and you lose the distance scale, but so what.
The Mk II goes for about $75 used and its a great value.
