FWIW, as someone fairly "beginner" at photography I'd have to
say that the 50mm 1.8 MkII I bought (even though I had the "consumer"
28-80) is better for more that just it's optics. Purely from a
practice/learning perspective, it's "limitation" of being a fixed focal
length has made me work more at composition (and it's obvious DoF
effects), and therefore improved my photography (I realise I could
have left the 28-80 at a particular focal length - the 50mm forces
the issue). I've taken better pictures with the 50mm, but I'd be
very hesitant to put it down purely to optics. I reckon a 50mm only
is a good way to learn. YMMV.

If it breaks (and it hasn't in a couple of years of more frequent
usage than any other of my lenses), I'm buying another. I got mine
for something like AUS$160 a couple of years ago from Foto Reisel
in Sydney.
