Sounds fair, although the whole procedure may take a while. I doubt during
regular events picture taking (say, wedding for instance) people grouped and
posed would e wiling to stay still and wait patiently until you will do
entire procedure. The DEP operation itself is not an issue, but switching to
manual may face some challenge. (Imagine shooting in certain temp as you do
during the events and doing numerous group portraits over the tables one
after another...)
However, DEP sounds to be neat thing...

It depends upon how you are using it. The way that I use DEP mode, is as
follows:
First press, near point.
Second press, far point.
Third press, camera sets focus and shows apreture.
Switch to manual foucus, leaving it as previously set by the camera.
Switch to another mode other than DEP, and make sure that at least the
apreture displayed previously is used.
Shoot.

This should work with flash.
