Yes, you are wrong. You can also use manual if you want the flash as the
main light.

Yes, Av mode is for fill in flash. That is why P mode can be useful, as it
will switch from fill in, to main light depending upon the ambiant lighting.
You can always shift the shutter/apreture in P mode, so it is very
versatile.
