The 20-35mm F2.8L is a sharp lens and has a constant F2.8. That being said, if you need the wider 17mm and don't mind a slightly variable F2.8-4 aperture go for the Sigma. The Sigma also has HSM which is a very quiet/silent AF drive much like Canon's USM. The only drawback IMO is the larger 82mm filter for the Sigma.
