Hi Susan, I used to have an EOS50E (Elan IIE) and its low light focusing (using its near infra-red beam) is excellent, better than my EOS3 which needs a flashgun or the ST-E2 to get similar results. If your Elan IIE is working well I'd put the money into lenses.
Don't know the G3, but I'm very happy with my Coolpix 4500 for macros and many other features.
