I would have to agree about primes in some situations.
 I own a 16-35/2.8L and love it but indoors, low
light, etc. my 24/1.4L is probably the best lens I
own.  If I had to keep only one lens due to financial
desperation, it would definitely be the 24/1.4L.  

What's also curious from my personal standpoint is
that I also owned a 35/1.4L and virtually never used
it.  I was hesitant to sell it because it was a
beautiful piece of optics but did in order to fund my
switch from the 70-200/2.8L up to the IS.  I have
never looked back now and don't miss it.
