See: http://www.kjsl.com/~dave/lenstest/lenstest.html
IMHO, the main benefits of the "L" lens are less DOF (blurry backgrounds)
and superior contrast. The main benefits of the "IS" lens are greater
DOF (slower hand-held shutter speeds) and longer focal-length range.

I own both. The "IS" lens gets mounted when I want to travel light and
bring a single lens and the "L" lens comes along when I'm able to also
bring my 70-200 lens.
