I don't think that will work. Definately not hust tried it - the flash still
fires with the master/slave switch off.

Setting CF3 on on the 550EX enables TTL flash, which as you correctly state
will not work with digicams, as a result the high powered red AF assist
works but the flash does not fire - at all.

In effect by setting the switch you are converting the EX550 to STE2
controller unit. Very good for longer range low available light photography
as it disables the dazzling/distracting on camera maglite but enables focus
assist with the less obtrusive red light.
