Id go with what you just said ,I have the 54MZ-3 and it gives some really strange combinations if used in Tv or Av modes
Sure, but that is due to E-TTL, not due to the flash
itself. If you let your camera talk to the flash with
anything exceeding the fire command, the camera craps
up your results.

To me, using AE modes *and* flash is too much lottery
anyway, so I never get into trouble like yours.

apparently metz e-ttl is the same as Canon
Of course. E-TTL is inside the camera, the flash
is a rather stupid thing.

But using the flash with the camera in manual mode and the flash in E-ttl end youll get the right result.
No, because you can't calculate the secrect ingredient
from the active AF field or the lookup table the Canon
engineers built into the camera for flash reference.

This is why I use the flash cell for controlling flash
output. No surprises. Camera in manual mode, set the
camera f-stop also on the flash and off you go.
Learn to estimate the viewing angle of the meter cell
and what might influence metering, and with a little
experience gathered you'll have perfect results without
any E-TTL lottery. And it makes the flash cheaper,
because you only pay the standard shoe with one single
contact instead of a dedicated module.

Fast, reliable, cheap. Pick any two of the three.
