I've never tried to carry a tripod on board, either before or after Sept
11th.  I would imagine that you'd encounter some problems at security these
days trying to bring it into the cabin.  Some other list members can
probably comment on that.

I pack my tripod in a duffel bag or a suitcase and check the bag.  Both my
Gitzo's fit in my duffel bag just fine, but I have to remove the central
column to fit into my suitcase, but that's not a big deal.  Wrap it up with
some clothing to protect it.  I've travelled this way probably a dozen times
and never had a problem.
