The only time you don't need a hood is when the lens is in the camera bag.I was at an NHL game in California last week, and one of the pro photographers shooting the game was using a 1Ds body with a 70-200 f/2.8L lens. OK, no questions there. But he had the hood reversed on the lens during the entire game.
