The same ideas were in my mind and I after last Photokina, I have a new option: I'm waiting for the availability of the Sigma 100-400 OS EX. On paper it looks great and I'd expect it to be cheaper than the Canon version. I recently contacted Sigma in UK and they said they are waiting further information from Japan. It should be released anytime now... but again, who-knows-when...
