Well, I've pretty well decided on the EF 100-400 USM IS lens.

Hi Jim,

I don't have this lens, but I do have the 35-350 which is a hell of a lens in its own right and shares its design (push pull and other features aside from IS) with the 100-400. Since my 300/2.8 was at Canon being serviced, I had the fortune of using the 35-350 for my wildlife and tele shooting lately, and it works pretty well in terms of sharpness, although the AF is slow on this one (not sure about the 100-400 in these terms, but the 35-350 doesn't seem to "pop" into focus, but rather more like "ooze" into focus...it is darn hard to tell when it is done focusing on the D60). My only real gripe is the push pull design. it works fine for weddings, where I usually use it and I am rarely zoomed all the way to the long end. However, when I use it for wildlife it feels quite odd at the long end, slow focusing and kind of flarey. It is almost more unwieldy than my 300/2.8IS and certainly isn't as fast focusing (even as the 300/2.8 on a 1.4x) or as sharp.

Anyway, that is my feedback and brings me to my question: Has anyone heard about the Sigma 80-400 with Optical Stabilizing (OS) in terms of price or availability? One of the other lenses they announced at the same time is available (the 100-300/2.8) is in at B&H and probably has been for some time, but the super long zoom (300-800/5.6 IIRC) and the competitor to Canon's 100-400 are nowhere to be found as far as I can tell. Anyone have any insight?

Thanks,

Mike
