I really think this type of "story telling" is to keep buyers from
waiting for the new product and causing Canon, and others, from having
stocks of the soon to be replaced equipment.
If I was in the market for a D-60 and knew for certain that the D-80 was
coming out next week, I would wait. So Canon would have another unsold
D-60 to keep.
