like better optical performance than most of the consumer zoom lenses if
possible. I did read about this one a few years ago and saw some favourable
reports of its performance saying it was better than the other non-L zooms
but I haven't been able to find anything at all about it when I searched
today. Can anyone who has used it give me any info about its optical
performance?

Hi Joe

I owned one a few years ago. Having used non-L and L zooms, I can say that
that it's the best non-L zoom I've ever used! Definitely a crank above the
rest. If you stop down to f/8 you will get L Series optical quality!
However, it's an old zoom (1990) and focusing isn't has fast and silent as
today's zooms. The only reason why I sold mine, was because I bought the
28-70L. . It is a shame that canon never made another non-L zoom of the same
optical quality. In the second-hand market it is one of the best deals
available.

Regards,

Hugo
