I use the old 100 f2.8 macro and it is a great lens as a dedicated macro lens.  If you 
want to use it as a non-macro you might want to get the newer version with USM as the 
auto focus on the older version is relatively slow.  However, for macro work I 
manually focus.  Don't get me wrong, if you are shooting static 'non-macro' subjects 
the auto focus is just fine and I have no problem with its accuracy, it is just slower 
than the USM.  The lens is extremely sharp.  I should also mention that it does not 
focus internally, so the length changes, though the front element does not rotate so 
you can still use a polarizer.

I am quite pleased with the results.  Most, if not all of the pictures in the flower 
gallery on my web site were made with this lens.  You're welcome to take a look, 
though I don't think you can critically assess sharpness or color contrast on a 
scanned JPEG web photo.
